Brief History

First Presbyterian church was organized in 1855 with ten members. It met in a rented carpenter shop and was served by traveling ministers. A bell purchased in 1857, and transported to Newton by ox cart, was used to call the community to celebrate, fight fires and to worship.

Three church buildings have occupied our lot. The present building, with the interior extensively remodeled twice, has served since 1924.
