Work Week is going to Benton Harbor, Michigan this year! This will be the second Work Week group from our church in that community - the first was 20 years ago! We will leave Saturday, July 28 and arrive home Saturday, August 4.
Laurie Hartzell, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Benton Harbor, says this about her community: "This is a town of much pain, poverty and division. It is also a community full of deeply devoted Christian men and women with many, many gifts. One of our passions is for groups to not only serve here, but begin to see Christ in places the world sometimes shuns. Our desire is that you will also allow this community to serve you."
Currently the plan is for our group to work on projects at the Safe Shelter for Families, a ministry serving families and children in crisis. We will not only be doing work on the physical building but also spending some time with the kids and families. We will be staying at the First Presbyterian Church.
One change we are making this year is that we no longer will be using the large 15 passenger vans. This is due to safety concerns about these vehicles. Instead, we will be leasing the smaller Flex crossover vehicles along with the cargo van.
Our initial information meeting for Work Week 2012 will be Sunday, February 26 following worship. Please plan to attend the meeting if you think you might be interested in going. If you know of others who would be interested in this kind of mission trip, please invite them to attend on February 26. If you can't attend, contact Larry or Linda Anderson, Dana Hashman, or Mickey Van Baale for information.
